A Note from Our Regional Vice President

Bob Alig

What an extraordinary time we had at the Middle States Regional Forum last month! Thanks to our Regional Council Chair Heather McDonnell of Sarah Lawrence College and our Chair-elect and Program Planning Chair Joel Lang of Salesianum School for a terrific conference. I’d also like to thank the more than 600 educators who attended the regional forum.

For me, student participation was the highlight of the conference. Our focus throughout the event was students in the region. Students were everywhere — meeting with keynote speaker Wes Moore, serving on a panel about AP® course participation with Peter Negroni, and talking to admission professionals and counselors about their college application experiences.

Following the regional forum, we gathered many of the Middle States SHEEOs and CSSOs and their staff to discuss AP and how to advance student achievement in the region. It was a great opportunity for all of us to learn from one another. We convened, engaged and supported our education leaders in this perfect capstone to our regional forum.

We invite our Middle States colleagues to let us know how we can make the regional forum and other resources even better as we work for next year.

Author Speaks of the Power of Expectations

Keynote speaker Wes Moore emphasized the importance of education to solving the larger problems plaguing our nation and world at the Middle States Regional Forum.

Moore, an author who spent his early childhood in Baltimore, was introduced by former Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick, who said how proud she was that Maryland had achieved top AP performance for three consecutive years. As Moore took the stage, he asked the students in the room to stand for recognition, saying, “I’m incredibly proud of the strides Maryland has taken.”

Initiatives in the categories of Getting Ready, Getting In and Getting Through were selected for their innovation and demonstrated efficacy in increasing the percentage of low-income students who get ready for, get into or get through college successfully. Each winning submission received an award of $5,000 to help expand or sustain the program.
