Betsey
Senior Director, Vendor Quality Management, Reston, Virginia
"I wanted to use my quality-management background in a new way. Education was an area of interest for me, and the College Board had the perfect balance of technical aspects within a ‘socially driven’ organization."
Betsey joined the College Board in 2007 from the high-tech electronics industry. She works directly with our operations vendors who provide the services for our main programs, helping identify improvement opportunities, correct problems and deliver quality programs and services.
She says she was surprised by the complexity of functions that go into scoring paper-and-pencil tests, and adds, “I feel very fortunate to be able to work on improvements that directly impact students.”
An avid boater, skilled cook and mother of twin 13-year-old boys, Betsey appreciates the flexibility her job provides, including, she says, “the holidays and other great benefits.”

JR
Associate Director, Consultant Management, Rosemont, Illinois
"I joined the College Board because it’s a nationally known education organization. I also recognized that there were opportunities for advancement within the company."
JR manages the consultant pool for our Midwestern and Western regions. He collaborates with both teams to help them provide high-quality professional development events, and he manages the meeting planning for all consultant trainings.
He appreciates the encouragement he receives in working on projects outside of his daily responsibilities. He says, “Not only does this allow me to get to know people and programs in other areas of the organization, it also assists me in my goal of professional growth.”
JR has personal goals, too, one of which is to run the Chicago Marathon.

Mylene
Senior Research Analyst, New York City
"I like the work atmosphere at the College Board as a whole. In general, everyone is professional and hardworking, but they also know how to relax and have a good time."
Education has always been important to Mylene and her family, so her decision to join the College Board in 2005 was not a difficult one. As a research analyst in Research and Development, she scrutinizes many of our tests and programs. Her current focus is on developing and maintaining the Higher Education Outcomes database, which, she says, “allows R & D to conduct test validity research, among other types of studies."
She adds (in layman’s terms), “My work could help students achieve, and possibly surpass, their educational goals.”
As for how Mylene relaxes and has a good time, she’s an enthusiastic traveler, and is currently mired in analyzing various paint-color options for her new apartment.

Steve
Senior Director, Policy and Program Management, New York City
"The most enjoyable aspect of my work is knowing that I have a positive effect on low-income students who want to go to college."
Steve was a high school counselor before joining the SAT program in 2000. He says he made the change because he “wanted to work for a company that has a national, as well as global, impact.”
Now serving as a product manager for the SAT Fee Waiver Service and overseeing SAT policy management, he says he remembers very early on being surprised “at the overall level of professionalism and capability. It’s unbelievable, especially for a nonprofit organization.”
Between work and cycling — he’s a bit of a fitness junkie — Steve devotes his free time to his family.

Stephanie
Regional Associate, Duluth, Georgia
"I greatly enjoy the team I work with — I feel like we’re a family of sorts."
Stephanie has strong ties to her community, volunteering at local shelters and coordinating her church’s mission events. And she applies that same passion to her job.
She says she felt welcome on the first day she met her team, which has grown to include educational managers in five states. “They trust my judgment,” she notes in explaining the successful relationships she’s cultivated.
She’s also steadily cultivating her expertise, saying, “My work goes far beyond completing paperwork and answering calls. I’m continually building upon my skills in order to be the strongest asset possible for our constituents.”

Ganesh
Executive Director, Operations Quality, New York City
"The College Board lets me interact with very talented and dedicated people."
Ganesh's passion for education led him to the College Board in 2009, with the hope that he could apply his battle-tested approach to quality management to the education arena. And as executive director of operations quality, he's done just that.
He spearheads the strategy and execution of initiatives that improve and sustain the quality of our day-to-day operations for various programs, and yet he's still often surprised by the "sheer volume and scale of operational transactions that occur on an ongoing basis." He adds that he finds satisfaction in the College Board's "complexity of process."
About his personal pursuits, such as writing and photography, Ganesh is quite modest — but less so about his daughters, ages five and two, who he says keep him "extremely engaged and busy."
